IT documentation and asset inventories, ranked by what they publish about how they handle your data.

Public transparency score, not a product or security rating. Transparency means: published on the vendor's own site, readable without a login, found by us at the addresses we checked.

IT documentation software: a buyer trial checklist

Trace one incident from the affected asset to a usable recovery procedure.

Model relationships before importing the inventory

Create a small set of records with stable identifiers, ownership and links to the systems they support. Include a retired device, two assets with similar names and a shared service used by two clients. Ask a technician to identify what an incident could affect and where the relevant procedure is kept. Change an asset name and inspect the links again. Record which relationships the product maintains automatically and which your team must maintain. A long list of imported devices can still be difficult to use when the operational context is missing.

Test client separation with ordinary accounts

Give one technician access to one client, a second technician wider access and a sample client a restricted portal role. Try search, direct links, attachments and exports from each account. Then test the integration account separately. A permission in the user interface does not establish the scope of an API credential. Keep the test data fictional and record the expected boundary before running the test. Ask who can change these scopes, how that change is recorded and how access is removed when the technician or client leaves.

Make integration failures visible

Synchronise a small inventory from a trial source. Change a record at the source, create a naming conflict and temporarily pause the connection. Inspect the destination for a last successful sync, an error and an owner who can act. Decide which system owns each field and test whether a manual correction is overwritten by the next sync. Ask about plan requirements, rate limits and recovery after an outage. Record a failed synchronisation as carefully as a successful one: the team needs to know when documentation might no longer describe the environment.

A trial you can repeat

Build an invented client environment for the trial: an organisation, a site, a device, an application and a procedure linked to them. Use dummy secrets only. Ask a technician who did not create the records to resolve a sample incident. The result should show whether relationships and procedures help the technician act, while access boundaries protect unrelated clients and records.

Hudu documents separate API-key settings for password access, destructive actions, exports and company scope. This illustrates why integration permissions deserve their own trial. The checklist is our editorial review structure, not a security assessment of Hudu or another vendor. Hudu: REST API and key scoping. Source reviewed 2026-10-03. The trial questions are editorial guidance, not additional measured criteria.

Narrow it down

Each of these lists the IT documentation and asset tracking vendors that meet one condition, with the source for each, and appears only where at least 8 of them meet it.

This category, criterion by criterion

How this market does on each criterion, with its own share and how it compares with the rest.

Every result links its source on the vendor page. A grey segment means we could not measure it, not that it is missing. See how we score.
